Drop-though decks like the Spooky and Kilima (as oppoesed to top-mounted decks like the Revolution and Mako) are the future of downhill riding. Since their invention several years ago, they've become more and more popular for going fast on - nearly all downhill races are now won on drop-through or drop-down boards. A while ago we realised that a lot of the benefits of a drop deck for downhill also apply for carving and other kinds of riding - so we came up with the dropped Kilima (above), which was the first ever drop-through board designed for more general use outside just bombing mountains. A lower centre of gravity on a longboard is good for a lot of reasons: Footbraking and pushing is easier becuase you don't have to bend your "board leg" as much to get your pushing/braking foor on the floor. So a lower board gives you more confidence stopping fast - essential. It makes the board more stable at speed - so fewer speed wobbles and faster skating! It's easier and more predictable to put the board sideways whilst carving and sliding. Becuase the board is so low, you're able to get your weight behind the wheels rather than over the top of them as you are on a conventional setup. So you're able to exert much more sideways force on the wheels, and control it way better. Result - you can throw down super deep carves and slide easier, making it easier, safer and quicker to stop from crazy speeds. Drifting corners is easier to learn too. Because it's more stable you can run your trucks as loose or looser than a higher setup - so the board is really stable but still super turny.
Some people don't like the look, but on a pintail or race deck where you don't stand on the trucks anyway it's a winner every time. Wether you bomb or carve hills or cruise the mellow flats you should definately try one out!
